Goldendoodles VS Cockapoos: Similarities & Differences

So you’ve been looking for a new fur friend to brighten up your days, help you get a little more exercise, and to add to your family… You’ve come to the right place!

Dogs are amazing creatures and we are lucky to have them!

The Doodle is one of the most popular breeds of dogs these days and although you might be familiar with the highly-recognizable Goldendoodle, or its equally well-known brother the Labradoodle. However, you might have overlooked a dog that might appeal to you as well, the Cockapoo.

In this blog, we’re going to be going over the differences between the Goldendoodle and the Cockapoo, which animal is better suited for your needs, and the pros and cons of both.

Goldendoodle VS Cockapoo: History

You might be well acquainted with the Goldendoodle if you’ve read this blog on Goldendoodles VS Labradoodles, but the Cockapoo’s history is a bit different.

The Cockapoo is a mix between a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel. Cockapoos originated in the United States around 60 years ago and although it is not known where the first Cockapoo was born, it was created in much the same way as the Golden and Labradoodle were, and if bred correctly can result in a trait known as hybrid vigor (where “desirable” traits are passed on from each breed in mixed breed litters). As an aside, getting traits like hybrid vigor takes good breeders several generations of gene testing to insure that it is done correctly and you are passing on the best traits. Done incorrectly and you can get the worst of both worlds in a dog’s offspring.

At Pride & Prejudoodles we have genetic experts that test our animals for these traits, which is why we can guarantee non-shedding vs competitors who can’t. Something to keep in mind!

The Cocker Spaniel, which makes up one-half of the Cockapoo, was bred as a hunting dog in the UK and was originally used to hunt the Eurasian Woodcock, which is where the “Cocker” namesake came from.

Sounds familiar to the origins of the Goldendoodle, doesn’t it?

Goldendoodle VS Cockapoo: Coats & Grooming

Goldendoodles have lovely coats that are usually a variety of gold, cream, or red colors. They can be straight, wavy, or curly depending on how prominent the poodle is expressed, and have moderate grooming needs. (Every 6-8 weeks for a Goldendoodle is the ideal timeframe for getting grooming).

Cockapoos also need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. With Cockapoos, typically you see a curly or wavy coat on them and their litters usually have a bit more variety between the coats. They vary in texture and density, again depending on the specific genes inherited. Cockapoos offer a wide variety of lovely colors including whites, creams, blacks, tans, beiges, browns, apricots, and reds. Our personal favorites are the red and apricot litters.

Goldendoodle VS Cockapoo: Temperament

Goldendoodles are friendly, eager to please, and intelligent. They love cuddling up and have a friendly and social demeanor which makes it easy to bring them around other dogs and people.

Cockapoos are fiery, energetic, and have a reputation for being quite the comedian. Their small size means that their vibrant attitude doesn’t mean too much turmoil at home. Happy, outgoing, and personable, Cockapoos have moderate energy levels and integrate into families effortlessly.

Goldendoodle VS Cockapoo: Size

Standard Goldendoodles weigh about 50 – 70 lbs, whereas the average size of the Cockapoo is around 15-25 lbs.

This disparity in size is probably the biggest difference between the breeds and a key factor in deciding which one is right for you. For some, Cockapoos are more reasonable than Goldendoodle due to space constraints. If you are renting, landlords might look more favorably on a smaller dog than a larger one.

A Cockapoo is a perfect size and even traveling with one would be a bit easier than a larger Goldendoodle.

Both the Cockapoo and the Goldendoodle are incredible, affectionate, and adorable animals that are great companions for any family. Which one is more appropriate for you?
